What’s New In Store: Lupins for Life

Chef Ian shares how he discovered Lupins for Life through ABC Landline - and why Aussie-grown sweet lupins (flour, flakes, crumb, semolina and kibble) are a game-changing pantry tool for gluten-free, high-protein, high-fibre cooking.

The nutrient-rich Aussie legume you’ll actually use

From Landline to the kitchen bench

I’m always looking for ways to cater to more dietary needs without sacrificing flavour or texture… and honestly, for a while there, things weren’t looking good.

There are plenty of gluten-free options out there, but so many fall short in the real world: some crumble, some clump, and a lot of them just don’t deliver that satisfying “proper food” feel.

Then one lazy Sunday afternoon, I had a few backlogged episodes of ABC Landline on… and I saw a segment on Australian Sweet Lupins. Lightbulb moment.

I rang Chris at Lupins for Life (Director & Business Operations Manager), and what started as curiosity turned into proper excitement. I began experimenting with lupin flour, then added the flakes, semolina, crumb and kibble into the pantry.

The results? Game-changing.
From crumbed zucchini, to thickening soups, to crunchy coatings on fish… even baking — it just works.

So… what are lupins?

Lupins are a golden Australian-grown legume that are naturally gluten-free and known for being high in protein and fibre. They’re an easy way to boost the nutrition of everyday meals without turning dinner into “health food”.

As the saying goes:

“Lupins are one of the world’s richest natural sources of combined protein and fibre.” — CSIRO

Why I rate them (chef-style, not science class)

  • Texture + structure (the bit most GF options miss)
  • Versatility — they work in sweet and savoury
  • Easy upgrades — a sprinkle here, a swap there, done
  • Aussie-grown — real pantry fuel from home soil

Easy ways to use each Lupins for Life product

(No overthinking — just add, mix, coat, cook.)

1) Lupin Flakes — the “breakfast boost”

  • Stir into granola, muesli, porridge, overnight oats
  • Add to smoothies for a protein/fibre lift
  • Mix into bliss balls or energy bites

2) Lupin Flour — smart baking and savoury swaps

  • Use in pancakes, muffins, banana bread, wraps and bases
  • Great in veggie patties, zucchini slice, fritters
  • Chef tip: you’ll usually need a bit more liquid than standard flour recipes — start around 20–30% extra and adjust as you go

3) Lupin Semolina — comfort food, upgraded

  • Coating for fish, chicken, patties
  • Add to soups for thickening and extra body
  • Great in gnocchi/pasta dough experiments
  • Can be used as a base for a high-protein “breakfast porridge”

4) Lupin Kibble — the protein-rich sprinkle

  • Stir through soups, stews, bolognese
  • Add to meatballs, veggie loaves, plant-based mixes
  • Use instead of couscous for grain-free bowls
  • Add to bread dough for structure and crunch

5) Lupin Crumb — your new favourite coating

  • Gluten-free crumb for schnitzel, fish, nuggets, croquettes
  • Sprinkle over mac & cheese / bakes for a crisp topping
  • Add to fruit crumble for a nutty, crunchy twist

Chef Ian’s “where do I start?” pack

If you’re new to lupins, start with:
Lupin Crumb + Lupin Flour + Lupin Flakes
That gives you: coatings, baking, and everyday boosts — three lanes, one pantry upgrade.

Important note (allergen)

Lupin is an allergen and may cause reactions for a small percentage of people. Some people with a peanut allergy may also react to lupin — so please take care and check with your household first.

Final thought from Chef Ian

“You don’t need a full diet overhaul — just a few smart swaps. Lupins are one of those rare pantry finds that make food better and make you feel better about what you’re cooking.”
